Around about the spring and autumn equinox are excellent times to cleanse and detox your body.
The spring equinox, which takes place on Monday 20th March this year, is a particularly powerful time to cleanse. According to Midi Fairgrieve, who is Radiance Cleanse's Nutritional Therapist, spring is THE time of purification, healing and rejuvenation. It’s a time to cleanse ourselves of winter’s residue and open ourselves up to exciting new opportunities. Spring time is the most harmonious time of the year for fasting and cleansing the body and mind.
I aim to do a 3 - 5 day (sometimes 7 day) juice cleanse twice a year, usually around the change of the seasons and either create one myself or go to a juice cleanse company like Radiance Cleanse.
Radiance are one of the original juice companies in the UK and I feel, one of the best. The team have excellent knowledge about juice cleansing and their juices are incredible as a result. The juices are well thought out, packed full of high quality, organic ingredients, are cold pressed and delivered to your door. This is a more expensive way to do a juice cleanse but is so convenient and effective.
Clare from Radiance has written this brilliant article for Detox Health Beauty about juice cleansing and the benefits, how to get the most out of a juice cleanse and she’s provided tips for preparing for a juice cleanse too. Well worth a read.
Why Juice Cleanse And What Are The Benefits
The idea behind a juice cleanse is to give your body and mind a break and allow your body to heal itself as nature intended. It gives your digestive system a rest from a constant intake of food and at the same time, ensures that you are still nourished with juices made from fresh fruit and vegetables. Our juices contain a huge amount of fresh, organic fruit and vegetables, far more than you would normally eat in a day and cold pressing them retains the maximum nutrient content.
There are many reasons that someone might choose to do a juice cleanse: some because they’re feeling they’ve had a heavy or predominantly unhealthy diet for a while and need a reset, or they’re looking to help shed a few stubborn pounds or kick start a new way of healthy eating. Others come to a juice cleanse as they’re feeling constantly tired, are experiencing digestive complaints (such as bloating), or perhaps they’ve noticed that they’re craving more sugary foods or caffeine. For others it may be a change in their hair and skin condition that they feel could be improved by diet.
The following are just a few of the benefits that our clients often find after doing a 3 or 5 day cleanse: they feel cleaner and lighter and have more energy. They are more aware of what they are putting into their body, both in terms of content and quantity, They often also realise the various reasons that they might be eating, such as an emotional response, habit or boredom. Clients often feel rested and rebalanced, with a greater sense of clarity. On a more tangible level they may notice some weight loss and more radiant skin and hair. One of the biggest pieces of feedback we receive is that they feel freshly motivated to continue a healthy lifestyle and that this is much easier having hit the reset button.
Background on Radiance:
Radiance is one of the oldest cleansing companies in the UK, founded by two friends, Christina and Clare, in 2009. It was the first Soil Association certified organic juice cleanse company and led the way in bringing cold-pressed juice and juice cleansing to the UK. The company has always been committed to creating high quality, non pasteurized or High Pressure Pascalised juices, made fresh to order in small batches. So the juices you receive are truly fresh and made especially for you.
The whole Radiance team cleanse regularly and really understand the cleansing process and what the experience is like for clients. The team is on hand throughout the cleanse (plus before and afterwards), so we can really fully support clients. Whether that’s picking the right cleanse or juices, helping them manage cleanse symptoms or being a metaphorical shoulder to cry on, it’s part of our service. We also have lots of additional items you can add to your cleanse, so that you can tailor you cleanse more fully to you.
How to get the most out of your cleanse
1. Choose the time of your cleanse wisely – make sure you don’t have a hectic work schedule or social diary. Making sure you have time to relax and recharge is key.
2. Prepare for your cleanse a few days before, by making changes to your diet such as reducing wheat, dairy, meat and alcohol. The more time you spend doing this, the easier your cleanse should be. This is most important with caffeine, as caffeine withdrawal can leave you with terrible headaches and feeling sick. Reducing it gradually should prevent this.
3. If possible get a friend to cleanse with you. It’s great having someone to cleanse with, as it keeps you motivated and makes the experience more fun.
4. Book in some sort of massage or reflexology. This is a time for focusing on yourself and these are hugely beneficial treatments to help promote detoxification, especially Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage.
5. Many people new to cleansing are worried that they’ll feel hungry. More often than not clients tell us that they can’t manage to finish all the juices as they feel so full! However, even the ones who do feel a bit hungry (often as they’re still training or rushing around) manage as we advise them to add in some snacks. Cleansing isn’t a competition and if you need to add in something solid then, this isn’t a disaster, it can just slow the process down a little!
Tips for Preparing for a Cleanse
GRADUALLY REDUCE CAFFEINE: Caffeine is the number one thing to monitor before you begin your cleanse. It is such an addictive substance that you should cut it out slowly to minimise the likelihood of withdrawal headaches. Try green tea instead - it does contain caffeine, so will help satisfy your body, but the caffeine content is much lower than it is in coffee. Try Teapigs Mao Feng Green tea or Yogi Green Energy tea.
EAT REAL FOODS: Ideally two weeks before your cleanse, cut down your intake of processed foods and microwaveable meals. Even if they claim to be healthy, they are loaded with hidden salt, which leads to dehydration. Also try to reduce the amount of dairy in your diet as it is hard on your digestion. For the three days before your cleanse switch to a predominantly vegetarian diet, focusing on lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, pulses, nuts and seeds and wholefoods. It will make a huge difference to your cleanse and your body will thank you for it.
OPT FOR LIGHT EXERCISE: This avoids putting excess strain on your muscles and joints, and reduces the energy demands on your body. Try Glow Yoga at Good Vibes in Covent Garden London as they use infrared heat, which allows your body to safely open and relax, whilst sweating out excess toxins.
UP YOUR GOOD BACTERIA: Start taking probiotics to keep the flora of your gut healthy. The gut contains a delicate balance of good and bad bacteria. When we get stressed or run down, especially in winter, the bad bacteria begins to take over which leaves the body out of sync and prone to illness. We like Symprove and Restore by Detox International.
RETHINK YOUR TREATS: Switch to dark chocolate, or even better choose raw chocolate. We like brands such as Pana Chocolate, Conscious Chocolate and Well + Happy.
HYDRATE: Aim for 1-2 litres of water per day. If you find that a struggle, try coconut water. It contains high levels of the electrolyte potassium, is only about 45 calories per serving and is packed full of Vitamin C.
