Kate Harahan from Neal’s Yard Remedies

Franchisee Kate Harahan from Neal’s Yard Remedies in Edinburgh.

Kate has owned the Edinburgh Neal’s Yard Remedies shop and therapy rooms since 2012. She is a therapist herself and has loved Neal’s Yard Remedies products since she was a teenager studying massage, reflexology and aromatherapy, which is the same time she first met Detox Health Beauty’s Sheena in Vancouver in the 90’s.

Kate approaches her treatments in a holistic, individual way, so if you book in for maternity reflexology you will most likely also end up with some health coaching and supplement advice, along with herbal remedy recommendations from the shop floor and a bit of aromatherapy and massage too! Kate studied maternity reflexology with both Susanne Enzer and Jenni Tribe, and health coaching with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition.

‘I always wanted to have my own therapy centre, and working with Neal’s Yard Remedies was a bit of a dream come true. The products we sell are amazing quality. They are produced in an ethical way, and I am proud to both sell and use them myself.’

When it comes to ingredients, we pride ourselves on our honesty, integrity and transparency. We make our products with the maximum organic, natural and wild ingredients, and carefully select other functional ingredients (detergents, emulsifiers, surfactants etc) with a view to safety, efficacy and biodegradability. Our entire range makes use of high quality organic plant-based ingredients, and we fully disclose our ingredient information with our customers, both online and, where space allows, on our packaging.

‘I have a particular interest in our essential oils, as an aromatherapist I love hearing the provenance stories behind the ingredients.’

Organic Rose Essential Oil Kerman Province, Iran

“The money we earn from our roses means we can build schools for our children.” Ahmet, Rose Farmer.

Organic Geranium Essential Oil Ituri, DR Congo

Helping rebuild over 150 women’s lives in an area devastated by civil war, with fair wages and community premiums.

Organic Lavender Essential Oil Provence, France

Our very first certified organic product, we’re especially fond of our French lavender essential oil, and the supplier, who we’ve worked with for over 25 years.

Organic Frankincense Essential Oil Northern Kenya

“We can’t live off the land or our animals only. This work that we do means we can buy food and we can send our children to school.”

Margaret, of the Samburu Tribe,
wild-harvesters of our organic frankincense.

Organic Orange Flower Essential Oil Province of Kénitra, Morocco

Our neroli is grown on a single estate. “Without the commitment of NYR we would not have been able to develop. Now we’ve planted 4500 trees.” Mr Alaoui, orange flower grower & distiller.

‘I’ve emptied out my wash bag to show you some of the products I use all of the time.

Seaweed Shampoo and Conditioner is great for my fine but wavy hair. It is also good for people with dandruff. Seaweed & Arnica Foaming bath I use as a shower gel and bubble bath to soothe any aches and pains. Pitrok deodorant and a perfume oil I blended myself using our base oil and some neroli, frankincense and rose essential oils.

For my face I keep it simple and use Palmarosa Facial Wash for combination skin, and I feel very lucky to be able to use Frankincense Intense Moisturiser and Eye Cream. It’s honestly the best natural product range I’ve used for my skin.

I don’t wear much make up, just RMS Beauty uncover up, lip2cheek and occasionally NYR Lychee lipstick.

For any ailments I use our Lavender & Myrrh mouthwash as a gargle, it knocks coughs, colds, tonsillitis on the head quickly, and eucalyptus pastilles to keep me healthy. I also love Weleda Rhinodoron Nasal Spray and Vogel Eye Drops for any allergies. My wash bag is from Life Story in Edinburgh.

Other favourites not pictured include our Wild Rose Beauty Balm, which I use on my face at night time to hydrate dryness and balance out oily patches. I love the Mother’s Massage Oil with Neroli and Mandarin, and use it to moisturize my skin after a bath, and also as a shaving oil! Just because a product is labeled with one usage, you can always experiment and use it in a way that works for you.

Internal remedies that I use regularly include Viridian multivitamins, magnesium and ester c to supplement my diet, a daily probiotic for gut health and l-theanine & lemonbalm for stressful times.’
