1) Chelsea, it's so lovely to meet you! You live in the sunny OC. Can you tell us about the wellness scene there?
The wellness scene here is absolutely amazing. We are so close to LA which seems to be the birthplace of all the new wellness trends that emerge. There are so many options for events and festivals to attend whether it's yoga festivals, sound baths, full-moon ceremonies or food gatherings centered around alcohol free drinks and gluten-free, superfood eats. Alcoholic drinks are definitely phasing out and instead people opt for a kombucha, matcha tea or collagen latte. I recently attended the Love Beauty Wellness Festival in LA and one of the hot topics was "adaptogens" which are botanicals that help your body adapt to stress – I just got some myself and am looking forward to trying them!
2) Do you have any favourite healthy restaurants or juice bars?
My latest obsession is Pressed Juicery. Not only do they have a wide selection of delicious juices, they now offer a "Freeze" which is basically a healthy alternative to frozen yogurt. It's a vegan, gluten and dairy-free soft-serve made from fruits, nuts and vegetables with a variety of healthy toppings. I cannot get enough!
3) What does a healthy diet look like to you? Do you have any daily wellness rituals you can share with us?
A healthy diet is really all about figuring out which foods work for you and make you feel good. If you're feeding your body foods that it doesn't like, it's going to affect your gut, digestion, skin, mood and so much more. Everything we eat really contributes to how well our body is going to function. Over the past few years I've really experimented and learned what works for MY body and what foods make ME feel good. My diet is gluten-free, dairy-free and mainly plant-based aside from eggs. I also do my best to make sure I'm not consuming any artificial sweeteners or ingredients.
My daily wellness rituals include doing something to move my body in the morning which is either a yoga class or a HIIT session at the gym. I drink 32oz of water in the morning and always nourish my body with a good breakfast, usually eggs and greens or a delicious smoothie bowl. Before bed I like to have a hot collagen-infused drink. I either mix it into my tea or make an almond milk cacao cinnamon latte.
4) How to you stay fit and active?
Working out in some way every day has been a part of my daily routine every since I can remember. I practice yoga 4 times a week at CorePower Yoga. I take their sculpt class twice a week which is a killer workout, and then either C2 or C3 hot vinyasa the other 2 days. On the days I don't do yoga I do a HIIT session at the gym and I like to use the Nike+ app – they have a ton of great workouts and I've been using it for a few years!
5) What are your favourite brands of active wear?
There are so many great brands popping up out here in Southern California that I've yet to try out but most of my leggings are from Athleta and sports bras from Lululemon. I recently got a pair of leggings from Vie Activewear that are SO comfy too. There's also a really great brand from LA called Four Athletics. They use a crowdfunding model so they are only producing what is ordered allowing them to sell their pieces at a fraction of the retail price – super interesting and their products are great!
6) Do you cook and if so, what's your favourite recipe book and do you have a go to healthy meal?
Since I work full-time during the week, I take a couple hours on the weekend to cook and meal-prep my meals for the week. I usually roast a huge batch of vegetables to use for my dinners so I don't have to cook when I get home. My go-to lunch is usually a big bowl of spinach, sautéed veggies and tempeh for added protein. You really can't go wrong with a big veggie bowl! It's so easy and delicious.
7) Where in the world serves your favourite food?
I'm going to have to go with Cafe Gratitude – their Whole/Macrobiotic bowl is absolutely amazing. It's a big bowl of yams, adzuki beans, sea veggies, sautéed greens, kim chee, tahini, almonds, rice and quinoa – doesn't that sound incredible??
8) Do you ever go to spas or retreats? If so, do you have a favourite?
I haven't been to any out here yet, but a retreat is definitely next on my list when I get some vacation time. I'd love to do a yoga retreat even if just for a few days to really unwind, disconnect from the digital world and connect with self. We get so caught up in our day to day lives and to-do lists so it's really important to take time out to JUST BE – I definitely need to be better about it.
9) What does your beauty routine look like? Do you have any can't live without products?
My beauty routine is pretty simple. I usually wash my face with just water and a microfiber towel and follow it up with using witch hazel as a toner. And I always moisturize and opt for moisturizer's with some sort of SPF to protect from the sun. I always love having a more natural look. I use Bare Minerals powder to even out my skin tone and then apply a little eyeshadow. I do like to have a pop of color on my lips though!
I also recently tried out a brand of skin-care products based in Newport Beach called Biovaj. They are 100% pure, cruelty-free, gluten-free, vegan and non-GMO. There's a cleanser, toner, moisturizer and serum and are known for their anti-aging properties. I really love them and they give my skin a natural, radiant glow.
Lastly, one of my favorite products is from Ajai Alchemy and is called "Radiance" – it's made with love by my beautiful friend, Fern Olivia, in LA. It's an organic therapeutic-grade essential oil blend that brings balance, support and promotes healing to your thyroid and adrenal glands. It's made with MCT coconut oil, lemongrass, geranium, frankincense and peppermint and it smells INCREDIBLE.
10) Do you have a favourite beauty tip you can share?
If there's one thing I took away from the Love Beauty Wellness Festival I attended it is that beauty isn't just about how you look, it's about how you FEEL and being true to yourself. So eat foods that make you feel good. Do things you love that make your soul happy. Follow your passions. Be yourself and you will radiate and create beauty all around you!
