Lou Dartford is a highly acclaimed make up artist and is well informed when it comes to organic, clean and green make up and beauty products. Here's a golden list of her favourite holiday products.
Ten Things I Can’t Live Without On Holiday…
I’m not good in the hot sun at all and will always seek out shade. When I am in it though for long lengths of time, or during the midday sun, I will always put on sunscreen. Green People is a favourite in our household, I’m prone to prickly heat and this one is great for sensitivity and keeping it under control.
Weleda Skin Food is a must in any holiday bag. Use it anywhere really to nourish and soothe – elbows, feet, cuticles and hands for example. It can also be used as a cream cleanser or a moisture mask for parched summer skin. Mix it in with any powder mineral make-up to make a cream version. Weleda’s White Mallow Nappy Cream is also a close contender, obviously for baby’s bums but also amazing on any patches of irritation, dermatitis or eczema. My hands often get quite sore but this really helps them. I’ve also used it on my face when I had nothing else to hand and it's been good – maybe not an everyday thing - it’s a lot thicker than Skin Food - but great in an emergency.
Juice Beauty CC Cream has become a permanent resident in my make-up bag so would have to come on holiday. It is a great lightweight base that does so many things. The coverage is minimal but it smoothes and brightens skin; mine definitely looks better after using it. It is great for adding extra hydration, while also protecting with a mineral broad spectrum SFP 30. I team mine with Juice Beauty’s concealer to give cover where I need it. If you want fuller coverage try this under your foundation to give it a radiance boost and extra defence against the summer elements.
A light dusting of Ilia’s setting powder is great for finishing your make-up, while also absorbing excess sebum. We want a holiday glow rather than a shine. You don’t have to wear foundation to use this; it can be used on a bare skin just to give more of a polished look.
Apparently I am very tasty, well for bugs anyway. I always seem to come home covered in bites so Lavender Essential Oil is essential in my holiday kit as it calms and soothes the bite. Lavender is also brilliant for things like burns and other skin irritations – apply topically to the infected area.
Vapour Organic Beauty’s multi-use sticks are great for adding a gentle flush of colour wherever you need it. Courtesan is lovely pink for cheeks and lips. A cream formulation means you can apply straight over moisturiser so no base products needed if you don’t want them.
Good cleansing is so important but especially when it is hot. I like to double cleanse to make sure my skin is really clean. Good old jojoba oil is perfect for that first cleanse - it will help dissolve dirt and grime from the day along with make-up and sunscreen. Use it for your second cleanse as well if you like or in the summer, a cooling gel wash is so nice and refreshing. Therapi Honey Skincare’s Rose Otto Honey Gel Cleanser is currently residing in my bathroom and would be packed into my wash bag for sure.
When it is hot I always keep a toner in the fridge to help cool me down. Use it during your skin cleansing regime or as a pick-me-up refresher anytime during the day. Spray it onto the back of your neck or on hot weary feet as well. Evolve’s Daily Defence Moisture Mist will calm and cool but also has the added benefit of hyaluronic acid to help with hydration levels.
Dr Bronner’s Magic Soap is a staple in our household and it definitely gets packed in the suitcase. Use it as your shower gel, shaving gel, face wash- it also works a treat to wash clothes. I’m sure it would wash anything, a multi-tasker without a doubt. You can clean your teeth with it but I’d make sure to pack tooth paste ;)
Shea Butter is another household favourite and another multi-tasker. Use it as a general body moisturiser or whip in some essential oils to give it more therapeutic properties. Brilliant after a long day at the beach – works great to tame sun frazzled hair as well. Perfect for a lip balm too. There are so many amazing blends available but I’ve been using a body butter by Planted Skincare and I love it.
