Catherine McCord created her company Weelicious when her children were young as a resource for parents to show them how easy it is to expose children to wholesome, delicious and homemade food. Her website provides hundreds of recipes which are simple, nutritious and flavoursome and created with children in mind. She's written two cookbooks: Weelicious: One Family and Weelicious Lunches. Catherine's goals are to inspire the reader with readily available ingredients; recipes which are fast, fresh and easy. I have started to use her website a lot and love her book Weelicious: One Family. Here's a conversation between Catherine and DHB:
It’s great to meet you Catherine. Can you tell us what and who inspired you to start your brand?
I had attended culinary school, worked in restaurants and catering companies for years. After I had my son, Kenya, I realized I could cook a gourmet meal but had no idea how or what to feed a baby. I started Weelicious as a place where parents could find fast, easy and fresh recipes for the entire family (plus tons of feeding and cooking tips).
What is your ultimate, classic recipe which your own kids love?
What top five foods can you get past even the pickiest of eaters?
Yogurt, hemp seeds, strawberries, mango and cauliflower. It all depends on how you add them to dishes!
Do you have a favorite cookbook and who do you admire from the world of wellbeing?
Flavors by Donna Hay. I’ve cooked out of it for years. Simple, nutritious recipes with tons of flavor.
Where is your favorite restaurant?
Blue Hill Stone Barn in Tarrytown, NY
What would be your last supper and who would you invite?
Roast chicken, mashed potatoes, sautéed greens and a big hot fudge sundae which I would enjoy with a big group of brilliant female entrepreneurs.
Which items will we always find in your fridge?
Greek yogurt, whole, skim and almond milk, berries, bee pollen, eggs and seaweed. The truth is our fridge is always packed, so you can find a lot of good stuff to eat.
Where in the world inspires you the most and which country serves your favorite food?
This has to be a trick question. I started modeling and traveling around the world when I was 13 years old, so world cuisine has always been a major source of inspiration. Mexico, France and Japanese are at the top of my list.
Where do you go to relax and how do you relax?
Honestly, playing board games with my kids at night is one of the most relaxing things I do. No outside distractions, just good ole fun.
Do you go for spa treatments and have you ever been on a health spa/retreat?
If so, what are your favorite treatments and where is your favourite spa/retreat? I love We Care in Palm Springs I’ve been going for years. If you’re trying to reset your mind and body, lose weight, quit smoking or just get clean it’s the ultimate. I love their body scrubs, facials and colonics to help detoxify.
Do you have any favourite beauty brands?
I’m a big fan of BeautyCounter and everything it stands for.
What does your beauty routine look like?
Do you have any handbag beauty essentials?
I’m loving Tata Harper Be Adored lip stain. The BEST color no matter your skin color and no artificial ingredients.
Finally, what advice would you give to your 16 year old self?
Wear more sunscreen and take it easy on yourself. Don’t let outside influences make you feel anything, but as strong as you are and should be.
